Creating a mental picture of a character in a story:
1. Describing APPEARANCE:
- physical features
She was a small, skinny old hag with a moustache
on her upper lip.
- facial expressions
Her eyes were wide with what seemed to be fright.
- body language
Atreyu sat there with bowed head
- attire
Her apron was grey and greasy.
2. Describing ACTIONS:
- what the character does will guide us to a deeper understanding of the character's thoughts and feelings.
- we can also derive a conclusion about the character based on what he / she chooses NOT to do.
3. SPEECH:
- the way the character speak and interacts with others
" What do you want? Who are you? she asked sharply.
4. IMPACT ON OTHERS
- to see the character through the eyes of other supporting characters.
What struck him most was her face, as he studied in wonderment the large, penetrating dark eyes, her high forehead, her features heavily etched with lines.
