Responding to Characters
'The Clay Marble' by Minfong Ho
Read the following extract from the novel carefully and then answer the questions below it.
Pound and lift, up and down, the two dolls took turns crushing the rice with exactly the same jerky rhythm that real village women pounded it to get the brown husks off. There were even some real grains in the miniature mortar set between the two dolls. It was the cleverest thing I had ever seen.
Children crowded around Jantu, pressing it from all sides, to watch her work it. “Let me hold it,” I begged, standing next to Jantu. “I helped you find the stuff for the dolls.”
Jantu nodded. Breathlessly I held it carefully and blew on it. It worked! One of the dolls bent down and pounded the mortar with its club. The other doll straightened up and waited its turn. I was still engrossed with it when someone shouted a warning: “Watch out, Chnay’s coming!”
Even in my short stay at the camp, I’d heard of Chnay. He liked to break things, and he was a bully. An orphan, Chnay had made his way to the Border alone. Too young to be recruited into the resistance army, Chnay roamed the fields by himself, scrounging for food and sleeping whenever he liked.
Chnay sauntered up and showed his way through to us. “What’ve you got there?” he demanded.
“Nothing,” I said, trying to hide the toy behind me.
Laughing, Chnay snatched it away from me. One of the dolls was ripped loose and dropped to the ground.
As I bent over to retrieve it, Chnay pushed me aside. “Leave it,” he s aid. “That’s for kids. Look what I have.” He thrust his arm out. It was crawling with big red ants, the fierce kind that really sting when they bite. “I’m letting them bite me. See?” he bragged. Already small fierce welts were swelling up on his arms, as some ants kept biting him.
“That’s dumb!” I exclaimed. Dodging behind him, I tried to snatch the mobile back from him.
Chnay flung the toy to the ground, scattering straw and red ants into the air.
I grabbed his hand, but he was taller than I, and much stronger. He’d shoved me aside and stomped on the dolls until they were nothing but a pile of crushed sticks and rags. Then, kicking aside a boy who stood in his way, Chnay strode off, angrily brushing red ants off his arm.
I squatted down beside the bits of dolls and tried to fit them together, but it was no use. The delicate mobile was beyond repair. I could feel my eyes smarting with angry tears. “I should’ve held on to it more tightly,” I said bitterly. “I shouldn’t have let him grab it away from me.”
Jantu knelt next to me and took the fragments of the dolls out of my hands. “Never mind,” she said quietly, putting them aside. “We can always start something new.”
“But it took you so long to make it,” I said.
Idly Jantu scooped up a lump of mud from a puddle by her feet and began to knead it in her hands. “Sure, but the fun is in the making,” she said.

I agree that Chnay is a bully because 'he liked to break things'. For example he 'ripped loose' the doll that belongs to the narrator.
i agree.chnay is a bully.she broke the doll and she is very bad.i think she should make more friends.
I think that Jantu is a very hardworking and friendly girl. She rebuild the dolls even though they were destroyed by Chnay.
jantu is still calm when chnay break the doll.she instead want to make a new doll.she is very good ,nice and calm person.
I think Jantu is a genius because her two dolls were able to crush the rice 'with exactly the same jerky rhythm'.
I think that Chnay is a bully. The evidence is "I grabbed his hand, but he was taller than I, and much stronger. He’d shoved me aside and stomped on the dolls until they were nothing but a pile of crushed sticks and rags. Then, kicking aside a boy who stood in his way, Chnay strode off, angrily brushing red ants off his arm." But later in the book he helped Dara find Sarun and the rest of her family, to conclude I think that Chnay is not that bad.
Yes,i agree that Chnay is a bully because he liked to break people's things . Example : 'Chnay snatched it away from me. One of the dolls was ripped loose and dropped to the ground.'
My impression of Chnay is that he likes to irritate people for his own entertainment. Yes i agree that Chnay is a bully because in the extract Chnay snatched a doll away from the narrator and he broke it for example 'Laughing, Chnay snatched it away from me. One of the dolls was ripped loose and dropped to the ground.'
Yes i agree with the narrator that Chnay is bully as he likes to disturb and hurt other people . He also distroy the toys that Jantu and the narrator made .
I agree that Chnay is a bully. " He liked to break things that is not his.""He also think that he owned the place that he can roamed around the fields by himself, scrounging for food and sleeping whenever he liked."He also ripped loose people doll and dropped to the ground.
Never mind,” she said quietly, putting them aside. “We can always start something new.”
This shows that Jantu persevered to make the dolls.
I agree that Chnay is a bully , even people there are afraid of him and will give some signal that he is coming like'“Watch out, Chnay’s coming!” This is one of the evidence .
'I’d heard of Chnay. He liked to break things, and he was a bully' this is the evidence saying that he is a bully and he like to break things like Dara doll , he snatched it and and one of the dolls was riped loose and it dropped to the ground .
I think Jantu is a well-going person. It is because she told Darav“Never mind,We can always start something new.”she said quietly, putting them aside.that shows that Jantu will not make small things into big problem.
Jantu. Whenever I hear this name, based on the text, I am reminded of a never-say-die attitude that she has. Upmostly, she has determination. She makes things seem possible when they seem impossible. She is a friendly, brave and a courageous girl. But the most essential quality that she had was patience.
Jantu is a kind person.she is also a polite person.she respect others so others respect her.she is a calm that would not do anything without thinking.
I think Jantu creative, she can make different types of toys and items to use and play with.
I also think that Jantu is calm, when Chnay came over and broke the toy, she did not get angry and make a fuss about it being broken. She just kept a positive attitude.
I think that Chnay is tough and mentally strong, from "One of the dolls was ripped loose and dropped to the ground." and "An orphan, Chnay had made his way to the Border alone." shows that he was mentally strong, a normal kid might have not been strong enough to deal with the huge blow of their parents' death and could even make it to the Border alone. I agree that he was a bully, because Dara had even heard of him although she had stayed in the Border for a short while that time.
I agree that Chnay is a bully because the evidence is "I grabbed his hand, but he was taller than I, and much stronger. He’d shoved me aside and stomped on the dolls until they were nothing but a pile of crushed sticks and rags. Then, kicking aside a boy who stood in his way, Chnay strode off, angrily brushing red ants off his arm." later in the story, Chnay helped Dara.
Chnay is a bad bully . He's not supposed to snatched things that does not belong to him . He also pushed Jantu aside when Jantu tried to retrieve his dolls . Its very bad to say others "dumb" and that is what Chnay said to Jantu .
I agreed that Chnay is a bully. He is a famous bully in the camp for breaking others things.Someone shouted a warning when Chnay is coming and he broke the narrutor's doll shows that he is a bully.
I think Jantu is a determine girl because she said :“Sure, but the fun is in the making,” when Chany had stomped the narrator's doll until they were nothing but a pile of crushed sticks and rags.
I think that Jantu is a quiet person because when Chnay flung the toy and stomped on the dolls until they were nothing but a pile of crushed sticks and rags but Jantu did not do anything to stop him .
My impression of Jantu is that she is a creative and kind girl. Even if Dara had accidentally let Chnay took the doll, Jantu did not scold Dara for letting the doll broke. Instead, she started with a new thing to play with.
Chnay is a bully because he likes to disturb Jantu and Dara as they were having fun making the dolls .
He also pushed Dara away as Dara is trying to pick up the the dolls that he had throw onto the floor . He should have been in a better attitude towards them because they had never disturb him before .
I think Jantu is a nice and calm girl. After Chany broke her toy,she is not angry and wanted to make it again.
I agree that Chnay is a bully as he was known well in that perticular area and people would be scared if they sees Chnay .
" I was still engrossed with it when someone shouted a warning: “Watch out, Chnay’s coming!” .
and
"I grabbed his hand, but he was taller than I, and much stronger. He’d shoved me aside and stomped on the dolls until they were nothing but a pile of crushed sticks and rags. "
It shows that he doesnt care about others feel and he is not afraid of anything
Jantu is a calm person and she did not throw her temper or lose her patient when Chnay came and destroy her beloved dolls .
I think jantu is also a strong girl because even after Chnay broke her two dolls, she did not really mind.
Chnay is a tall boy and was strong. He likes to break things so i agree that he is a bully.
@Hakim
I agree with Hakim, he has good evidence. Chnay may seem like a rough bully but he is actually a kind person.
i agree with narrator because the sentace “Watch out, Chnay’s coming!” shows that people are afraid of him, which also means he is a bully.
Chnay is not a polite person because "Chnay pushed" Dara;not only that Chnay also "snatched it away" from Dara.
I think Jantu is a kind girl. She is calm when chnay came over and break her toy mobile. She also did not blame Dara for letting Chnay break her toy mobile.“Never mind,” she said quietly, putting them aside. “We can always start something new.”this sentence shows that Jantu in kind and positive.
And not forgetting Dara told Jantu“But it took you so long to make it.”But jantu told it was fun to make even though it was hard and long time to make.
I learnt one thing.
"No matter how long you take to do one thing , surely there is a hardwork."
My impression of Chnay is that,he is a rough boy as the text says that he snatched the doll that belong to Jantu and shoved Dara aside.I agreed that Chnay is a bully because he likes to break things and they don't belong to him.
I agree that Chnay is a bully as he always liked to break things and made his way to the border alone. Besides that, Chnay even flung the toy to the ground, scattering straw and red ants into the air.
I Agree With The Narrator That Chnay Is A Bully Because He Like To Snatched Things From Others And Destroy The Toy That Was Belong To Jantu .
I think jantu is a patient girl. Even though her doll has been brokened by chnay, she was not angry and she wanted to make a new one. In this, we can say that jantu is a kind and quiet girl.
a ) my impression of chnay is that he is really someone who likes to bully others who are innocent . yes , i support the narrator that says chnay is a bully . "Laughing, Chnay snatched it away from me. One of the dolls was ripped loose and dropped to the ground " , chnay took the narrator's doll and ripped it . even though the narrator did not did anything wrong to chnay , he still bullied the narrator . " Even in my short stay at the camp, I’d heard of Chnay. He liked to break things, and he was a bully. " this shows that everyone in the camp knows that he was a bully in the camp .
b) “Never mind,” she said quietly, putting them aside. “We can always start something new" , this shows that jantu is someone who is patient , creative and a kind girl . even though the doll had been ripped by chnay , she was not angry or mad . even though she knows that it takes a long time to make the doll and it needs lots of hardwork , she was still patient with it and willing to make a new doll .
I agree that Chnay is a bully. He like to break things. For example, he ripped loose the doll and dropped to the floor. He was quite famous in village because of his act because the narrator went to the camp for a short stay, she had already heard of Chnay already.
I agree that Chnay is a bully because 'He liked to break things and kick aside a boy who stood in his way.' I think he is not that bad but he just want to have attention and have friends but in a wrong way.
1)I agree that Chnay is a bully because when Dara was playing with her dolls Chnay grabbed one of them and stepped on it like pieces of sticks and handed out to her big red ants and wanted her to play with them.
2)Jantu is a girl who is creative and likes to recreate the things that she had lost before. To Dara, she is a friend who is helpful and caring and likes to solve difficult problems that Dara is having.
i agree with narrator because the sentace “Watch out, Chnay’s coming!” shows that people are afraid of him, which also means he is a bully.
Chnay is not a polite person because "Chnay pushed" Dara;not only that Chnay also "snatched it away" from Dara.
I agree with Aidil that Chnay is a bully as he likes to bully Jantu and the other children for no reason.
Jantu is a very creative and kind girl. Even if Chnay had snatched and broke the doll from Dara, Jantu did not get angry. Instead, she started with a new thing to play with.
aidil, chnay is a boy not a girl.
Alfira , I agree with your answer but I think if you put in evidence from the story and add in more detail , it would be better .
Aswinder,
Jantu did not fix the doll after it was broken. She just created something else to play with. “Never mind,” she said quietly, putting them aside. “We can always start something new.”
Aidil ,
I believe that chany is a boy not a girl .
I agreed that Chnay is a bully, because He’d shoved the narrator aside and stomped on the dolls, the dolls and the Chnay is taller then narrator and he liked to break things.Juntu is a polite and kind person, because after Chnay broke the dolls, she putting them aside and said“We can always start something new.”
a) What are your impressions of Chnay based on this extract? Do you agree with the narrator that Chnay is a bully? Support your answer using evidence from this extract.
I think that Chnay is a big bully, he is very rough with girls and he is not a gentleman.
I agree that Chnay is a big bully, he pushed Dara away and broke Jantu's toy.
"As I bent over to retrieve it, Chnay pushed me aside. “Leave it,” he s aid. “That’s for kids. Look what I have.” He thrust his arm out. It was crawling with big red ants, the fierce kind that really sting when they bite. “I’m letting them bite me. See?” he bragged. Already small fierce welts were swelling up on his arms, as some ants kept biting him."
I agree with Aidil because I think Chnay wants to bully Dara just to think that he has friend. You still need to describe more about him.
I do agree with the narrator . Chnay is a bully . He stomped onto dara's and jantu's dolls until they were nothing but a pile of crushed sticks and rags . He loves to do things his own way . He flung the toy to the ground .
Melvin, it should be different type of toys, not types of toys.
I agree with Kimmy. He likes to irritate people for his own entertainment.
To:Wizah97
From what you have said, where is the evidence that shows how Chnay destroy the toys that Jantu and his friends had made?
I do agree that Chnay is a bully. But think for awhile,Chnay is traveling alone to the border. Iguess he has noone to travel with with or talk with.I guess he do not wish to be alone. So he has no other choice but to bully and get attention.I will not blame Chnay because of this reason. But for me,he could have chosea better way to get attention other than bullying.
I agree with abu.Jantu is creative and recreate things. But what do you mean by dara helping jantu at the passage?
to Kiimmy ,
i agree with you that chnay likes to irritates others (:
@aswinder
I agree with you aswin, Jantu still keeps a calm and positive attitude even when Chnay broke her toy.
I agree that Chnay is a bully because he shoved Dara aside and stomped on the dolls that Jantu and Dara made until they were nothing but a pile of crushed sticks and rags. Then, kicking aside a boy who stood in his way like a bully he is .
@Aidil
I think you have forgotten, Chnay is a boy and not a girl.
I agree with Aswinder that Jantu is a very hardworking and kind girl. Jantu starts making new dolls even after Chnay broke her two dolls.
Dear Aidil , please use capital for people name.He is not BAD but he is only lonely . No one to mingle with , thats why he like to disturb him .
Yes, Chnay is a bully guy. Even a girl he bullied.. My first impression of Chnay is very bad... Although he is a big bully guy who likes to bully others, he is very brave and independent boy... The sentence is that shows he is a big bully are 'He liked to break things, and he was a bully.' But i liked his charactersv other than bully other
@melvin i agree on what you said about Jantu , well yea she is a creative young girl , she even asked Dara to played another game even and said that the fun part on playing a doll is by making it
Aisyah, I agree with you that Jantu has a never-say-die attitude, patience and is brave, friendly and couragerous.
My impression of Jantu is that she's very smart and very creative. She always feel that if somethings broken or destroyed, she can always try again and make a new one.
Chnay is not a polite person.i also agree in what aidil comment on chnay except as she is a girl not a boy.i hope that Chnay would be in Jantu position and see how she fell.
I think Jantu is a calm girl , she knew how to react sensibly.
to hidayat :
i agree with what you said that maybe chnay thinks he owns that place and do whatever he wants . maybe he just want to attract others attention .
I Agree With Lydia As She Said That Everybody There is Scared Of Chnay Because Everytime He Comes Everybody Starting To Panic .
Chnay is a unpolite person. He should have make more friends rather than bully people.
Lydia, it's particular. ;-)
Dear Aisyah ,
I agree with you that Jantu have a never-say-die attitude . She is so patient and a relax that she suggested to make a new toy to play .
I agree with Khairi. Calm is the best to do when something bad happen to us.
Nad, I agree that Chnay likes to bully people and break things(:
I agree with Melvin that Jantu is calm person and she kept a positive attitude.
I agree with Khairi. Calm is the best to do when something bad happen to us.
I agree with Aidil that Jantu is a very calm person as she did not get mad and frusrated when Chnay bullied her and broke her dolls
amirun.your english is poor.what do you mean by chnay is a bully guy?please improve.
Amirun please improve on your english because you use the wrong words at the wrong place like'I think Chnay is a bully guy'You should remove the word 'guy' and that will be okay.
I agree with ayisha, that many people is afraid of Chnay and this can be shown by their action.
i agree with pearlyn's comment. jantu will not make small things into a big problem.
Hsabrina ,
According to the pssage , the narrator is the one who said dumb not Chnay .
I agree with Heng Yi that Jantu is a determine girl .
xingyi, i agree with you. if chnay were not to be a bully, Dara would not heard about Chnay.
Netra, broken is already a past tense. I agree that Jantu is a quiet and kind girl.
netra ,I agree Jantu is a patient girl and she always calm when she doing somethings.
i agree with Fairous,
he should make more friends rather than bullying other people.
Lixian, how do you know Jantu likes to react sensibily? You should put in more evidence^^
I agree with Xing Yi. Chnay is a tough and mentally strong boy as he could overcome anything that had happened to him. He is also a bully as he can do anything that he want in that place.
Dear Aisyah ,
I agreed that Jantu have a never-say-die attitude . She is so patient and relax that she suggested to make new things to play !
Alfira , you can put in evidence like " Chnay snatched it away from me. One of the dolls was ripped loose and dropped to the ground. "
I agree with Wan Yi. Jantu is very positive.
yes , chnay should not bully others as he might hurt others feeling . instead of bullying , he should change his attitude and be friendly to others . to him , its a entertainment to bully others .
Chnay. He isn't a real bully. He was a kind boy and he's also kind-hearted. The way he treats people is giving people the impression that he wants them to look down on them. Distinctively, his actions spoke louder than his words when he actually showed his soft side.
um...sawako i agree with your answer but it will be better if you put in more details.
Pearlyn, I agree with you. But I think easy-going would be a more suitable word than well-going.
I think Chnay has a mental problem as he let ants bite him for no apparent reason. 'He thrust his arm out. It was crawling with big red ants, the fierce kind that really sting when they bite. “I’m letting them bite me. See?” he bragged.'
Leonard:I agree with you that he is not that bad.
I agree with Pearlyn's answer,Jantu is a well-going person. She did not blame Chnay for breaking the doll,Jantu only said quietly 'Never mind,we can always start something new.'this also shows that Jantu is a person who will easily forgive others for the wrong they make.
My impressions of Chnay is that he is rather a strange bully as he thrusted his arm out and it was crawling with big red ants stinging him when they bite and he had snatched the doll away from Dara. Also, eventhough he is not afraid of the big red ants' sting, he is still young to be recruited into the resistance army.
Kimmy
I agree with you as he let the ants bite him .
Aidil, Chnay is a male and you use 'she' when you talk about him.
I can see a number of good answers. Many of you were able to elaborate on your answers by giving examples from the text. However, I am a bit disturbed by the number of grammatical errors in some of your answers.
With regards to the names of people, like Chnay and Jantu, please begin with a capital letter.
A few of you also forgot to put in the quotation marks when you quote the evidence. Overall,I am happy with the collaboration in the class.
