'A Thousand Splendid Suns' is a 2007 novel by Afghan author Khaled Hosseini, his second, following his bestselling debut, The Kite Runner (2003). It focuses on the tumultuous lives of two Afghan women and how their lives cross each other, spanning from the 1960s to present day.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Thousand_Splendid_Suns
The Bamiyan Valley below was carpeted by lush farming fields….The sky above all of this was an immaculate, spotless blue.
“It's so quiet,” Laila breathed. She could see tiny sheep and horses but couldn't hear their bleating and whinnying.
“It's what I always remember about being up here,” Baba said. “The silence. The peace of it. I wanted you to experience it. But I also wanted you to see your country's heritage, children, to learn of its rich past. You see, some things I can teach you. Some you learn from books. But there are things that, well, you just have to see and feel.”

Students’ responses:
I agree with the extract that experience is important in our life. We may not really understand something just be reading books. We need to experience it to get a vision of something. However there is a limit in experience which means that not everyting have to be experienced. For example smoking. Everyone knows that smoking is bad but some people purposely try to smoke as they want to know how it feels like. But in the end they pick up the habit and became addicted. Joni Tan 2A
I certainly agree with the quotation: some you have to see for yourself, some you have to experience, some you have to read from books. What is important is what you learn from experience. People cannot teach you everything, so sometimes you have to see to believe. Books give knowledge, seeing the ‘real’ things is even better. (Chok Shu Ying)
Yes, I do agree. If you learn from a book, you cannot picture it clearly. If you see it‘live' you can understand better. (Nakulan)
I agree with this extract. There are somethings in the world you just cannot learn from books. One can learn many things from experience. For example, a book may give you a rough sketch of a certain place in the world. But to believe and truly understand, you must see it with your own eyes and feel it for yourself. For example, when I was reading a book about the beautiful scenery of Switzerland, I could only picture some of it But when I had the opportunity to visit the country, only then I know more about the country. (Douglas Lee)
You cannot learn everything from books. You cannot learn everything from what people teach you. Sometimes you have to see to believe it. There is also a difference between reading a book and watching a movie. The book uses vivid words to describe a place or thing but a movie show you the actual thing. (Darshinee Raman)
I agree that everything that we need to know is not only from books. I believe we can also learn things through our personal experience or even going on field trips. We will also remember what we learn better when we see, hear or feel it. (Azirah Md Salleh)

I've read A Thousand Splendid Suns, by Khaled Hosseni.
The book is quite interesting.
It teaches us how's life in Afganistan.
I've learn to be more appriciative and lucky compared to their life there.
I agree with the quotation. There is always something in this world that you need your heart to feel and "see", you need to go out and experienced yourself, nobody can teach you. The way you see it, is the way you see this world. When you learn it you also learn about the past, find out what it is , you will feel this world much better.See the world differently , or even put it upside down, you will find out more, more than you read a thousands of books.
I agree. A lot of things you can learn from books and from other people, but we can't always rely on others, a lot of things we need to explore ourselves and learn from it. The things that we learn ourselves, we will remember deeply.

Yes I agree, like feelings, although from books, they write the words but you cannot feel it and have to experience it to know the feelings. Some things you just need to experience it by feeling and seeing it. By doing that , you can know and learn about the rich past. Reading from books itself only cannot let one experience and know much about it. Like some things people teach , does not mean you can see it or feel it totally.

I agree with the extract as even though reading books you can learn alot of things like places, but once you go to that places you can learn more about the places and you can even feel how beatiful the scenery is ,however even though you can go oversea ,it doesn't mean that you do not need to read books (Jian Hong 2A)
I certainly agree with the quotation: some you have to see for yourself, some you have to experience, some you have to read from books. What is important is what you learn from experience. i agree with the extract from the book,
you cant always learn from books,
you need to see and feel the thing,
like having hands-on experiences,
things learn in books wont stay in ur mind for a long time, but things you see and feel, will stay with you for a long time
You cannot learn everything from books. You cannot learn everything from what people teach you. Sometimes you have to see to believe it. I think that not all things can be learned just by reading books and doing research. We must widden our knowledge by reading and also seeing. But because we have been reading books all long, going out to see once awhile, will leave behind good memories that we will remember for life. Some things we see, cannot be written down.
This book writed by Khaled Hosseni is interesting in the way they teaches us things.I agree with the extract from the book that not always books teaches us how to do things but we just have to see it or experience it yourself.
I agree with the quotation. For certain things, we really have got to experience it in reality to understand fully what and why everything is happening. Reading books can only brings you to your imagination of the situations. We've got to see life in different perspective ways and understand why, so that's the main reason why we have to experience the situations rather than just imagining it which i suppose many of us will forget about it later on.

This story is written by Khaled Hosseni. The story is petty interesting. This story make us know how lucky we are compare to them...
I agree with this quotation. As when you experience it yourself, you will have a better understanding and it will leaves a strong impact on you.
in my point of views, i think i have to agree with the father. some of the things recorded in a book is well written and the area or events are no longer exist in the world, so we could only depend on books to tell us roughly how was it like then. however, if we could still find certain things still exist in the world, why not experience it yourself? i think u could gain more knowledge by seeing it than to reading it. and i do think that not everything in the world is recorded down in books, so i do think that seeing the stuff with ones own eyes are indeed convincing and more of an attractive than in books and we may get to know more about the things/events/places than reading it from books
I agree with the quotation that just by learning from what others teach you or from books cannot expand your knowledege but by experiencing it you can make memories and remember better.(Khoo Si Min 2A)
I agree. There always has some knowledge that we cannot find from books or teachers. But the the world was very big, we can find all the answers in the world. Therefore i agree.
i agree with the quotation as a country's heritage , children and rich past is not someting you can learn from books;you have to see it for yourself and experience it yourself.
"You see, some things I can teach you. Some you learn from books. But there are things that, well, you just have to see and feel."
I think what Baba said is true. In this life, we should learn things ourselves and not depend entirely on other people in our thirst for knowledge.
I agree with the extract. We have to experience it to understand certain things better.By reading books is not enough as occasionally, it is difficult to visualise and sometimes what we had expected would not turn out to be way we had expected.
